Hickory
The next level of the Patch Series, looking at how popular woven repair techniques can inform new systems on how to repair and join hardwood.
Patch 02 continues an exploration into repair and connection. Two slabs of live-edge hickory are joined by thin, woven strips of wood, echoing the logic of traditional live edge joinery methods to create a strong, interlaced surface.
When starting this project, most of the discussion with my professors and peers was about what technique I would use to create the incisions into the live edge slab. I sought out professors and contacted designers trying to learn more about CNC machining techniques and for the time I was trying to hunt down a live edge slab that would be adequate for this project I planned on using the CNC machine.
Talking with one designer that had came to visit my class, I was reminded of what I wanted the making process to feel like. The design references the hand work of the textile repair process of darning, and using the CNC machine would be quite of opposite of this and provide little to no level of possession and nuance with the process of making.
I settled on utilizing the plunge router in combination with templates I would make, this allowed me to carefully create a composition of lines on the spot and make adjustments as I felt. A process I could be much more proud of and connected to.
